Microsoft 365 E5 already includes Entra ID P2. You only need the P2 add-on on Microsoft 365 E3, Business Premium or Business Standard seats. Buying the add-on on E5 seats pays twice for the same capability, and it is the most common Entra ID licensing error we see. In a mixed fleet, license the add-on for the non-E5 seats only.

The common step-up path is Microsoft 365 E3 plus the Entra ID P2 add-on, from $74 per user per month against Microsoft 365 E5 from $90. The difference buys Defender for Endpoint P2, Defender for Office 365 P2, the full Intune Suite and a Security Copilot allocation. E3 plus P2 is the cheaper path when identity is the only gap. P2 is also the licence that most often sits unused.
