Business Premium, E3 and E5 are among the most capable security platforms an Australian organisation can buy. The problem is never the licence. It is that the protection ships switched off, and stays that way.

A licence buys access to these tools. Configuration buys the protection. Reaching and holding a target security posture, such as an Essential Eight maturity level, takes engineering and ongoing operation regardless of the tier you are on. See our Essential Eight to Microsoft 365 mapping for the control-by-control detail.

Buying Microsoft 365 in Australia. CSP, NCE, annual vs monthly.

The short answer for how Australian businesses actually buy Microsoft 365 today, and where a CSP partner like Modern 42 fits in the picture.

What a Microsoft 365 CSP partner does

Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) is Microsoft's standard reseller channel. As your Australian CSP partner, Modern 42 supplies your Microsoft 365 and Office 365 licences, invoices in AUD, runs mixed plans for different teams on a single subscription, and stays accountable for the licensing relationship.

Microsoft 365 NCE pricing, explained

The New Commerce Experience (NCE) is the commercial model every CSP subscription runs under today. It defines annual vs monthly pricing, allows seat increases mid-term but reductions only at renewal, and is what our pricing calculator models. There is no separate non-NCE price for new Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

Microsoft 365 CSP vs buying direct

Microsoft does not undercut its own CSP partners; headline list prices are the same either way. Buying through an Australian CSP partner adds local AUD invoicing, a single Australian point of contact, mixed-plan flexibility, and security configuration baked into the same engagement when you partner with Modern 42.

Annual vs monthly Microsoft 365 pricing

Under NCE, monthly commitment is roughly 20% more expensive per seat than annual. Annual is the right call for stable headcount and still allows seat additions mid-term. Monthly only earns its premium when seat counts move up and down fast: project staff, seasonal hiring, or rapid scale-ups.

Renew before 30 June to lock in current pricing.

Microsoft has confirmed price increases from 1 July 2026 across several Microsoft 365 and Office 365 plans. The new price applies at your next renewal after 1 July, so a pre-renewal review now can both lock current pricing and tighten your security posture at the same time.

FAQ

Secure Microsoft 365 deployments

Common questions from organisations buying Microsoft 365 licensing and the security configuration that should come with it.

A secure Microsoft 365 deployment is one where the security capabilities in your licence are actually configured and enforced, not just available. That means Conditional Access in enforcement mode, phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication for every user, Privileged Identity Management on every admin role, Microsoft Defender and Intune tuned past their defaults, and Purview protecting sensitive data. Most tenants run a fraction of this. Modern 42 closes the gap between the licence you pay for and the protection you actually have.
Yes. You do not need to switch licences or migrate your tenant to engage us. We run a review of your current Microsoft 365 environment, identify the security capabilities you are licensed for but have not switched on, and configure them. If you also move your CSP to Modern 42, the licence and the configuration become a single accountable engagement, but securing an existing tenant is a service in its own right.
Most resellers send you an invoice and little else. Modern 42 is a Microsoft Solutions Partner for Security with an Identity and Access Management specialisation. The team behind your licences configures Entra ID, Conditional Access, Privileged Identity Management, Defender and Purview, and can evidence the controls for frameworks like the Essential Eight. We supply the licence and stand behind the deployment that uses it.
It depends on your size, your obligations and which controls you must evidence. Business Premium covers a great deal of the security baseline for organisations up to 300 seats. Microsoft 365 E5 unlocks Entra ID P2 (Privileged Identity Management, risk-based Conditional Access) and the full Defender and Purview stack. The licence is necessary but never sufficient: every tier still requires configuration. Use our pricing calculator to compare costs and our Essential Eight mapping to see which controls each tier supports.
No. Modern 42 is headquartered in Canberra and 100% Australian-owned, and we supply and secure Microsoft 365 for organisations across Australia, with dedicated landing pages for Canberra, Sydney and Newcastle. Pricing is indicative and dated; we confirm exact CSP pricing on quote.
Yes. Modern 42 is an Australian-owned Microsoft 365 CSP partner and licensing reseller. We supply Microsoft 365 and Office 365 licences across Australia, from the small-business plans (Business Basic, Business Standard, Business Premium) through Microsoft 365 E3, E5, frontline plans and Microsoft 365 Copilot. The difference from a commodity reseller is that we are a security specialist behind the licence, not just an order form.
Yes. We supply Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard and Business Premium to Australian small and mid-sized businesses, with a right-sized plan recommendation up front. Business Premium is the security baseline we point most SMBs at because it bundles Intune, Defender for Business and Entra ID P1 with Conditional Access. We will still recommend Business Basic or Business Standard when that is the honest fit for your business.
Headline list prices through an Australian CSP partner are not lower than buying direct from Microsoft, because Microsoft does not undercut its own channel. The value of a CSP is local AUD invoicing, mixed-plan flexibility, a single Australian point of contact across all your Microsoft 365 subscriptions, and security configuration baked into the same engagement when you partner with Modern 42. The real cost difference between vendors is usually in what you get configured with the licence, not the licence itself.
NCE is the New Commerce Experience, Microsoft's standard commercial model for CSP subscriptions. It sets annual commitment vs monthly pricing (monthly is roughly 20% more per seat), allows seat increases mid-term but no reductions until renewal, and is what every Australian CSP partner now resells under. Our Microsoft 365 pricing calculator models both annual and monthly under NCE so you can compare them directly.
Annual commitment is around 20% cheaper per seat than monthly under NCE. That is Microsoft's own pricing, not a discount we control. Monthly is only worth the premium when your seat count moves up and down fast: project staff, seasonal workforces, or rapid scale-ups. For stable headcount the annual term is the right call, and you can still add seats mid-term; seat reductions wait until renewal.
